Wine Exports from Spain Up 50% Compared with 10 Years Ago

Spanish wine is a force to be reckoned with on the global wine scene, and its popularity has continued

to grow over the years. Export data offers proof of this trend: Spain now exports 50% more wine than it did 10 years ago. In fact, sales peaked in 2017 and, broadly speaking, they reflect growth of almost 50% in the last decade.

In 2018, exports to Portugal, France, and Germany increased, while those to the UK, the US, and China declined. Despite that performance, the general trend over the last 10 years has been positive.

Germany is Spanish wine producers’ main market, accounting for 14.6% of the total. France is in second place, with 12.7%, followed by the UK, with 9.9%, according to efeagro.com. Beyond Europe, the main importers of wine from Spain are the US, with 9.4% of the market, and China, accounting for 5.3% of the total.

Production is expected to increase by a notable 40% in 2018/2019, although the pace of growth is expected to ease in the short term.
